Boris: Train operating companies can deliver much a much better customer experience. For example, in a normal ticket window, you can't easily display information to people, whereas with NextAgent it is very easy to display information such as maps, time tables, when the next train will arrive, as part of the conversation that the customer service agent has with the consumer. (1:27) Trisha: Will operators benefit? Boris: For operators, they get a lot more flexibility on how they deliver customer service. So, for example, a customer service agent at a less frequented station may be called upon to help a customer via NextAgent at a station that is really busy. Or, at busy times at a major station, they can bring on extra staff via video conferencing technology and get operationally much better. (1:50) Trisha: How did this technology come about? Boris: The idea for the technology came around a challenge that our customer in the UK threw at us, which is: how do we help them improve customer service while also helping to reduce costs? So, our engineers looked at new technologies, such as cheap and widely available broadband internet as well as video technology and combined the two together with all the experience we have in doing ticket vending machines to create what we call a virtual ticket office, which we call NextAgent. (2:21) Trisha: Awesome. How realistic is this virtual ticketing technology? Boris: We actually feel we can create a much better than realistic experience. Even physical factors like having the machine designed so when you stand in front of it, you're at a comfortable distance to the person you are talking to, are all important factors in making it a realistic and comfortable experience for passengers.
